Loc Stages Explained: Baby, Teen & Mature Phases

Every loc journey is different, but one thing we all experience are the phases of loc development. Understanding each stage helps you care for your hair properly and trust the process.

The Baby Phase (0–1 Year): Your locs are forming. During this stage you’ll experience shrinkage, frizz, and hair that may not look like locs yet. That’s okay. This is when your foundation is being set.

The Teen Phase (1–3 Years): Budding begins. Your hair is thickening, some locs may form unevenly, and retwists don’t always hold as long. You’ll be tempted to retwist more often — be patient. Let your hair mature.

The Mature Phase (3–5+ Years): Locs are fully formed. They hold shape, retwists last longer, and you’ll see that beautiful full loc look. This is when maintaining scalp health and moisture becomes even more important.
